Lauren Pearlman joined the history department this fall as an assistant professor. Black Political Power in the Federal City, ss UNC Press,captures the transition from black protest to black political power on the municipal level under the Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon administrations, an era during which local battles over War on Poverty and War on Crime efforts played out under strict federal oversight. It examines the intersection of national and municipal politics to better understand the continuing rise of the modern carceral state.

At West Point, she developed a digital-media primary-document-based reader on the long civil rights movement. Florida has a rich and fairly under-explored history in both civil rights and law and order that is begging to be told.
